I am thrilled to share an exciting development — a step forward in refugee and IDP statistics. Will take you on a path into the first draft of standardized questions for identifying refugees and IDPs in household surveys. Together with the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP, and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS), we have embarked on this endeavor.

As a contributor to this joint effort, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by refugee, IDP, and statelessness statistics. Inconsistent identification methods and varying data collection practices have long hindered our ability to gather accurate and comparable data. Driven by a sense of urgency, EGRISS has united its efforts under internationally recognized frameworks, such as the International Recommendations on Refugee Statistics (IRRS) and Internally Displaced Persons Statistics (IRIS). This harmonization paves the way for improved data quality and enhanced comparability.

Our shared dedication and expertise have led to the creation of a comprehensive set of standardized questions that encapsulate the best practices in the field. This collaborative spirit has propelled us towards a future characterized by refined methodologies and more robust statistical insights.

As a contributor, I firmly believe in the practicality of methodology. Together, we have devoted our efforts to ensuring that our standardized questions are user-friendly and readily applicable in real-world scenarios. We have meticulously designed guidelines that integrate into existing household surveys, empowering survey designers and implementers to incorporate these questions. This allows data collectors to capture vital information consistently and accurately, resulting in the production of high-quality and comparable refugee and IDP statistics.

Our publication serves as the catalyst for a vibrant methodological dialogue within the field. Through the Methodological Paper Series, EGRISS aims to foster an environment of knowledge exchange, where ideas are shared, methodologies are refined, and new frontiers are explored. As a contributor, I extend an open invitation to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to join us on this transformative journey of continuous improvement. By embracing diverse perspectives and collective wisdom, we can truly drive progress within the field of refugee and IDP statistics.

The introduction of standardized questions empowers decision-makers to formulate evidence-based policies and interventions that effectively address the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable populations. It is my firm belief that by advancing data collection methods, we can inspire collaboration, foster innovation, and pave the way for a future where data becomes a catalyst for meaningful change.
